What is a GLP-1?

First, we want to assure you that GLP-1's are NOT a stimulant, so you do not have to worry about unpleasant side effects like not being able to sleep or having the jitters.

GLP -1 's are a small protein (peptide) that activates metabolic pathways in the body to increase blood sugar metabolism and reduce appetite. It imitates a hormone called glucagon-like-peptide-1 (GLP-1). You may have heard of GLP-1 before. It has been used to help treat type 2 diabetes under the brand names such as Monjouro®, Zep Bound®, Ozempic ®, Wegovey®. Obesity is a complicated and serious chronic condition that can lead to many other complications - including type 2 diabetes, prediabetes, and heart disease. As of 2018, almost half (42%) of adults in the US lived with obesity, defined as a body mass index (BMI) over 30 kg/m2. However, most people with obesity are undiagnosed, and less than 3% have been prescribed a medicine to help them manage their condition. Although obesity and excess weight can directly lead to type 2 diabetes and prediabetes, weight management can reduce that risk, preventing or delaying the onset of these diseases.

How does weight loss with a GLP-1 work?

GLP-1's reduces your appetite and makes you feel fuller for longer periods of time. It also keeps you in "fat-burning" mode. Because GLP-1 targets fat cells and regulates blood sugar, you don't have to worry about losing muscle mass or dehydration (water weight loss). GLP-1 has also been shown to help stop the production of plaque on blood vessels.

While using a GLP-1, it is highly recommended that you:

  • Eat a fibrous diet.

  • Focus on fruits and vegetables that are high in fiber.

  • Eat small high protein meals as digestion is slowed down while on this medication.

  • Avoid foods high in fat as they take longer to digest.

  • Limit alcohol intake as this medication can lower blood pressure.

  • Drink at least 32oz of water a day to avoid constipation.

What to expect while on a GLP-1 weight loss program?

The physical benefit of GLP-1 is that it can reduce your appetite and make you feel fuller, so you eat less. Other Benefits may Include:

  • Physical hunger often dissipates

  • Better sleep

  • Higher energy levels

  • Helps with insulin pathways and blood sugar levels

  • The more momentum you gain, the better you will feel

  • On average, you can expect to lose 15% of your body weight, however, that can vary depending on the weight of the patient. Patients who have more weight to lose can see greater results.

  • Patients typically see a weight loss of 1 to 3 pounds per week, however, that can vary depending on the weight of the patient. Patients who have more weight to lose can see greater results.
