IPL 101: What It Treats, What It Feels Like, and What to Expect

If you've been covering the same brown spots with concealer every morning, or your cheeks stay pink no matter what you put on them, you've probably heard someone mention IPL. It's one of the most requested treatments we get asked about, and it's now available at Graceology Med Spa.
Here's everything you need to know before your consultation.
What IPL is
IPL stands for intense pulsed light. Instead of a single laser beam, it uses gentle flashes of broad-spectrum light. That light is drawn to two things in your skin: extra pigment (the brown in sun spots) and small visible blood vessels (the red in redness and broken capillaries).
The light breaks up the pigment and seals off those tiny vessels. Over the next few weeks, your body clears them away on its own. At the same time, the gentle warmth encourages new collagen, so skin looks brighter and smoother with each session.
The goal isn't a different face. It's your skin, just clearer and more even.
What IPL treats
Sun spots and age spots on your face, chest, and hands
Redness and flushing that never fully fades, including redness from rosacea
Broken capillaries around the nose and cheeks
Freckles and blotchy tone that make skin look uneven
Red or pink acne marks left behind after breakouts
Dull, tired-looking skin that needs a reset
We can treat the face, neck, chest, hands, arms, shoulders, and back.
What it feels like
Most guests describe each pulse as a quick snap, like a rubber band, with a flash of warmth. It's very manageable. Your provider applies a cool gel first, gives you protective eyewear, and checks on your comfort the whole time. A full-face treatment usually takes less time than your lunch break.
What happens after
Your skin may look a little pink or feel warm for a few hours, similar to a mild sunburn. Most guests go right back to work and can wear makeup the same day.
Here's the part that surprises people: brown spots get darker before they disappear. For about a week, treated spots look like coffee grounds sitting on your skin. Then they flake off. That's a good sign. It means the treatment is working.
Your results over time
Week 1: Spots darken and start to flake. Redness begins to calm.
Weeks 2 to 4: Spots are gone or noticeably lighter. Skin looks clearer and brighter.
After your series: Tone is even, redness is under control, and texture is smoother.
Long term: With daily SPF and a maintenance session once or twice a year, results can last for years.
How many sessions you'll need
Most guests see their best results after 3 to 5 sessions spaced about a month apart. Broken capillaries sometimes clear after just one or two. We'll give you a clear plan at your consultation so you know exactly what to expect.
Why fall is the right time to start
IPL works best on skin that isn't tanned. By October, most summer color has faded, and the spots it was hiding are easy to see and easy to target. Starting now also means you'll finish your series over the winter, with clear, even skin in place before summer comes back around.
Is IPL right for you?
IPL is a great fit if you have sun damage, brown spots, redness, or visible capillaries and want real results without real downtime. It works best on light to medium skin tones.
If you have a deeper skin tone, melasma, a recent tan, or you're pregnant, IPL may not be the right first step. That's exactly what your consultation is for. We'll look at your skin, talk through your goals, and recommend what will get you results safely, whether that's IPL or another Graceology treatment.
