How Often Should You Get a Facial (and Does It Really Matter?)

This is one of the most common questions we hear, usually followed by,“I feel like I should be getting facials… but I don’t know how often or why.”

Here’s how we explain it in the treatment room.

What facials actually do

Facials help support the skin in ways daily products can’t fully do on their own. They improve hydration, circulation, gentle exfoliation, and barrier function. For many people, they also help calm irritation and reset skin that feels congested or dull.

They’re not meant to dramatically change your face. They help skin function better so it looks and feels healthier over time.

Is once a month necessary?

Not always.

Monthly facials are often recommended because skin cells naturally turn over about every four to six weeks. Seeing skin around that timeline can help maintain balance and prevent small issues from becoming bigger ones.

That said, not everyone needs monthly visits year-round.

What affects how often you should get a facial

Facial frequency depends on several factors:

  • Your skin type

  • Your main concerns (dryness, acne, sensitivity, aging)

  • The season

  • What you’re using at home

For example, winter skin often benefits from more support because cold air and indoor heat disrupt hydration and barrier health. Someone with acne or congestion may benefit from more regular treatments for a period of time, then space them out later.

Is it okay to only get facials occasionally?

Yes.

Many people come in seasonally or when their skin feels off. Facials can still be helpful even if they’re not frequent. The difference is that occasional facials tend to be more of a reset, while regular facials help maintain stability.

Neither approach is wrong. It depends on your goals.

What happens if you wait too long between facials?

Usually nothing dramatic.

Skin may slowly become drier, duller, or more congested. Makeup may not apply as smoothly. Products may feel less effective. These are often signs skin could use more support.

Final thoughts

Facials aren’t a requirement and they’re not all-or-nothing. They’re a tool.

Whether you come in once a month, a few times a year, or when your skin asks for help, the goal is the same: supporting skin so it behaves better and feels more comfortable.

A consultation can help determine what makes sense for your skin and lifestyle.
